- Urgent Appeal for Intervention: Unjust Delay in Graduation Due to Administrative Errors at the UNIVERSITY OF LIMPOPO
- Date
- Feb. 25, 2025, 9:19 a.m.
Dear Members of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education,
I am writing to bring to your attention a critical issue I am facing at the University of Limpopo, which has severely impacted my academic progression and delayed my graduation. I seek your esteemed intervention to rectify this matter.
Background:
I diligently completed all required modules for my degree, as reflected in my academic transcripts. However, I was recently informed of an administrative error concerning my registration for a crucial module.
Details of the Issue:
Module Registration Error: The university alleges that I mistakenly registered for SPHB032 instead of the required SCHB032 module. This discrepancy was not communicated to me at any point during my studies.
System Oversight: The university's registration system permitted this enrollment without any warnings or restrictions, leading me to believe that my registration was correct and complete.
Delayed Notification: I was only made aware of this issue last week, well after the registration deadlines for alternative arrangements, such as enrolling in the correct module at another institution.
Unjust Accusation: The Head of the Chemistry Department has incorrectly claimed that I "failed SCHB032," a module I was never registered for, further complicating my academic standing.
Consequences:
Due to these administrative oversights, I am now facing a delayed graduation, with the next possible conferral date pushed to 2027. This postponement has profound implications on my future career prospects, financial stability, and personal well-being.
Similar Precedent:
This situation is not isolated. In 2024, two students, Ms. Philisiwe Cele and Ms. Ntandomayenziwe Mnguni, faced a comparable predicament at the University of Limpopo. They were deregistered on the brink of graduation due to alleged administrative errors regarding their course admissions. These students were compelled to take legal action against the university to seek justice for the undue hindrance in their academic journeys.
Appeal for Intervention:
I respectfully request the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education to:
1. Investigate the administrative processes at the University of Limpopo that led to this error and the subsequent mishandling of my academic records.
2. Mandate the university to rectify this mistake promptly, allowing me to register for the correct module or graduate as scheduled on my academic record without further delay.
3. Implement measures to prevent such occurrences in the future, ensuring that no other students endure similar hardships.
Your prompt attention to this matter would not only aid in resolving my personal predicament but also uphold the integrity of our higher education system.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
MR TD MATSETELA
