Dear Standing Committee on Finance,

I would like to publicly express my strong disagreement with the recent remarks made by the Minister regarding the recovery of assets from individuals involved in corruption.

While the Minister suggested that only certain assets should be recovered, I firmly believe that all assets acquired through or connected to corruption must be seized and recovered in full — especially when the stolen funds were meant to improve essential public services such as hospitals, medication, and community development.

It is morally and legally unjustifiable to allow individuals who have looted public money to retain any of their wealth or properties while citizens continue to suffer due to the collapse of healthcare systems, lack of medicine, or shortages of critical infrastructure and machinery.

When corruption affects basic human needs and the right to life, justice must be complete and uncompromising. Allowing partial recovery sends a dangerous message that those with power or political connections can still benefit from crime.

If people steal money meant for the public, every cent and every asset they gained must be reclaimed to restore trust, recover public losses, and strengthen the rule of law.

Failure to do so undermines South Africa’s leadership at the G20, its anti-corruption agenda, and the principles of equality, accountability, and transparency that our nation stands for.

In conclusion, I call for a stronger stance from government:

Recover all stolen assets in full.

Hold every individual accountable regardless of position or relationship.

Ensure that recovered funds are redirected to essential services such as health, education, and infrastructure.

The people of South Africa cannot continue to suffer while corruption is excused or treated lightly.
