Dear Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans,

The Issue
It is profoundly disheartening to witness individuals who bravely contributed to our liberation struggle now languishing without recognition or compensation. These are people who fought passionately for the freedom many enjoy today, yet while these selfless veterans and student community martyrs suffer in silence, others who were not even born during these turbulent times reap the benefits. Tragically, those who once stood their ground in the self-defence units in the townships and the nameless martyrs of the community, today face illnesses, pass away, and leave behind families struggling to provide for a dignified burial.

The sacrifice made by these courageous individuals is undeniable and should not be forgotten. While they operated in townships rather than military camps and may lack comprehensive documentation, this should not disqualify them from being recognized officially as veterans. Their contribution was invaluable, and their bravery is the bedrock upon which today's society stands. It is essential that they are identified, verified, and included in the Department of Military Veterans' database.
Official engagement and recognition of former self defence units member who are not yet benefitting is important for the creation of a unified society and acknowledging the sacrifice in the liberation struggle against Colonialism and Apartheid ensuring that they are properly integrated into society and provided with benefits .
This will correct the failure and neglect of the past and marginalization undermining the goals of struggle they fought for.

Concrete steps must be taken to ensure these heroes receive due recognition. This can be achieved by thoroughly reviewing testimonies and available evidence from peers and community members, providing medical and financial support to those still suffering, and ensuring that families of deceased martyrs receive necessary aid for proper burials.

Each day that passes without action is an injustice to these unsung heroes. We must honor their sacrifice by guaranteeing they benefit from programs designed for military veterans. This recognition extends beyond mere compensation; it is about preserving their legacy and understanding their pivotal role in our history.
