Dear Portfolio Committee on Employment and Labour,
Over the past year, with load shedding getting worse, our suppliers have been unable to produce product, in this case, specifically aluminum extrusion and plastic injection molding, as both are heavily dependent on electricity. This problem means that we are unable to manufacture our products, which incidentally, are used mainly by Eskom, and associated power transmission and distribution companies!
Now it has been brought to my attention that the latest release of the PPPFA Buying Regulations, released on the 16th January 2023, no longer contains any reference to local content. This will mean that most of the products being manufactured by ourselves, and companies like ours, can / will be imported - probably from China. They will be cheaper, and probably readily available, but of poor quality, and at the cost of local employment.
If we import the goods, not only will our company close it's doors and put 20 employees back on the street, but so many others like us, as well as those aluminum extrusion companies, plastic injection molding companies, and the like.
I feel it is important that the issue of local content be relooked, so as to secure local employment. What's the use of having Eskom and the like up and running, with poorly manufactured products, and no one will be able to afford to use electricity?
Our company is situated in Chamdor, an industrial area in Krugersdorp, adjoining Kagiso, Gauteng.
I trust that this issue will receive the attention it deserves at the highest level. Thank you for all the good work you have done to date.
Please help us to save these jobs.
