Dear Portfolio Committee on Social Development,
I assume that the Older Persons Act falls under your jurisdiction. I want the grants payable to older persons to be reviewed using scientific data which includes cost of living, accommodation, amount paid to older persons to be benchmarked to other types of grants, older persons paying VAT. There should be a separate Minister for Older Persons as allocated for women and youth. This is pure discrimination. I have asked for assistance from other citizens but nobody is stepping up. I am too busy presently as I am the Coordinator of the Local Government Advocacy and Learning Network which comprises of 80 civil society organisations in the greater Durban Metro area. I am doing it on a voluntary basis and living off State pension. Please advise if you can initiate a process to get this initiative off the ground.
