Dear Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services,
Hi Mr V Ramaano
But we have concerns with the government is not doing enough against human trafficking of females and children due to open borders and weak law enforcement. These acts are part of Gender based violence, The 3rd biggest industry in the world right now is the buying and selling of women. some key facts:
1. From reports (see attached) there is correlation between illegal immgeration and human traffiicking (females sexual violence, Organ harvesting, forced prositution, female murders .etc many along the lines tagerting only women (GBV) and chilren)
2. Trafficking in South Africa is on the rise. (https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2018-10-26-human-trafficking-on-the-rise-in-sa/)
3. South Africa is a source, transit and destination country for victims of human trafficking. (http://public.wartburg.edu/mpsurc/images/mejia.pdf)
4. Some victims are forced into drug addiction. Law enforcement in South Africa reported that traffickers drugged victims to coerce them into sex trafficking. At the same time, some government-run shelters denied victims of human trafficking because of drug addiction. (https://www.refworld.org/docid/5b3e0a7fa.html)
5. Organized criminal groups—including Nigerian, Chinese, and Eastern European syndicates, local gangs and individual policemen facilitate trafficking into and within South Africa, particularly for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation.(https://2001-2009.state.gov/g/tip/rls/tiprpt/2008/105389.htm)
6. Traffickers recruit victims from urban and poor and/or rural areas within South Africa to other urban centers, such as Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Bloemfontein, where traffickers force victims into sex trafficking and forced labor in criminal activities, drugg mules, ID theft, Marriage scams, drug mules and forces labor. Syndicates, often dominated by Nigerians, facilitate trafficking in the commercial sex industry. (https://www.state.gov/reports/2020-trafficking-in-persons-report/) (https://www.news.uct.ac.za/article/-2017-05-16-migration-of-the-nigerian-mafia)
7. The third biggest industry in the world is the buying and selling of women and children according to various reports. (see attached trailer 2 min video)
8. Local girls in South Africa are prone and the Government still has not done anything with this (see some ENCA reports) ... majority of tagerts are are women and this bills need to be protected.
There is obvious relationships between ilegal immigeration and human trafficking (and government will have a narrow focus on GBV but not look at it broadly, all forms of voilenve against women) and from reports it correlates, when 1 increases the other also increases.
Kind regards
