Dear Nompendulo,
My name is Sylvia Phasha, I am writing on behalf of my child who is a second year Bio Science student at the university of Witwatersrand in Braamfontein. The reason for this communication is that we are aggrieved by the decision of NSFAS institution, they approved our application for the academic year 2024 but when we are about to make registration for 2025 academic year, we were unfortunately informed by the university that the child's registration was blocked by the reason that we owe the university the previous year's tuition fees ( R149000.00) for 2024 as NSFAS was unable to make the payments. We contacted NSFAS but to our surprise we were informed that they defunded the child's funding without granting the exact reason as why same was defunded.
May you kindly assist with the above matter, I did not make the payment for that academic year (2024), under the impression that NSFAS has taken care of the fees and accommodation for 2024. I am honestly frustrated by NSFAS decision as I am earning way less than NSFAS threshold and cannot be able to make payment for the current year fees including the outstanding fees of the previous academic year. I also feel like NSFAS does not uphold and has deprived the child her right of Section 29(1) of the Constitution which stipulates, the right to a basic education and the right to a further education.
Your prompt intervention in the above regard will be extremely appreciated.
Yours Faithfully
Sylvia Phasha
